After various news regarding the decision of the European Union (EU) government on port charging in various gadgets and mobile devices in recent months, the relevant parties finally passed the regulation starting in 2024.
In the rules regarding "Common Charger" in its official journal, the EU states that as of December 28, 2024, all electronic devices including gadgets sold in the EU must use a USB Type-C port.
These electronic devices include: cell phones, tablets, cameras, pairs of headphones and earbuds, headsets, handheld videogame consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, and portable navigation systems.
In addition, if each of these devices has a power higher than 15W, it is mandatory to write down its USB Power Delivery.
Of course, as expected, this will affect Apple devices sold in the region. Therefore, there is a possibility that the next iPhone product is planned to replace the Lightning port with USB Type-C, although it is not certain which series of iPhone devices will start switching to this USB port for now.
The same rule also states that as of April 28, 2026, this rule also applies to laptops. The next step is for EU member states to adopt and publish, by December 28, 2023, the necessary laws, regulations and administrative provisions to comply with this directive.
